Am I Making the Right Decision?

Let’s face it—adulting is hard. You’re faced with tough decisions daily, and half the time you’re wondering if you’re making the best choice. Some decisions are small, like “What am I going to eat today?” Then there are the big ones—the kind that feel like they’ll shape your future, your family, your finances, and maybe even the fate of the entire world (okay, maybe not the whole world, but you get the point).
And here’s the thing: for believers, there’s an added layer. It’s not just about making a “good” decision—it’s about making the right decision, the one that aligns with God’s will. But how can you really know you’re in step with Him and not just leaning on your own understanding? Let's look at some key ways to know that you're in alignment with God's plan.
1. You Have Peace—Even If You’re Nervous
Peace doesn’t mean you’re not nervous. It means that deep down, you feel a stillness and assurance that you’re on the right path. Philippians 4:7 talks about “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.” If your decision is drenched in anxiety, confusion, or chaos, it may be a sign to pause and pray before proceeding. Stillness is the first step in times of uncertainty.
2. Your Choice Aligns with God’s Word
God will never lead you into something that contradicts His Word. If you’re unsure about a decision, check it against Scripture. For example, if the opportunity requires compromising your integrity, causing intentional harm, or walking outside of love, it’s not from Him—no matter how “good” it looks on the surface. God’s will always aligns with God’s Word.
3. Godly Counsel Confirms It
Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Sometimes God will use the wisdom of spiritually mature people in your life to confirm the direction you’re feeling. This doesn’t mean you let others make decisions for you or even that you seek advice from a bunch of people, but trusted, godly voices can offer perspective and help you avoid blind spots.
4. It Produces Godly Fruit
God’s will will bear God’s fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). If your decision is producing bitterness, resentment, or destruction, it may be time to reassess.
5. God Opens (and Closes) Doors
Sometimes the clearest sign of God’s will is the path He allows—or doesn’t allow—you to walk. If you’re pushing against constant resistance and frustration, ask whether God is redirecting you. On the flip side, if opportunities flow with divine timing and provision, it could be His green light.

Knowing if you’re in alignment with God’s will isn’t always about hearing a loud “Yes” or “No” from heaven. Often, it’s about slowing down, seeking Him through prayer and His Word, and paying attention to the peace, fruit, and confirmation He gives.
And remember—God is more concerned with your heart posture than your perfection. If your desire is to honor Him, even in your uncertainty, He will guide your steps. Psalm 37:23 reminds us: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.”
So breathe. Keep seeking. And trust that as you walk with Him, He’ll make your path clear. Can you recall big decisions you've made that God guided you through or moments that you felt you made the wrong move that still worked out for good? Let's talk about it in the comments below!
