Do What You Have to Do

Somebody said adulthood is trash and while it's not necessarily the worst hood I've ever been to, it definitely comes with its share of challenges. For instance, having to deal with BS in order to make ends meet is trash. Zero stars. Do not recommend.

I think we can all agree that adulting is a roller coaster ride. One moment you're at a high, living your best life. The next you are falling backwards down a seemingly never-ending hill that you didn't see coming. But, after you scream your heart out the ride comes to an end, you catch your breath, and walk off in relief to the nearest pretzel stand. You deserve a cheat snack after that one.

I think one of the hardest parts of being a full-fledge grown up with responsibilities is discovering what you want to do with your life and funding said responsibilities, which kind of go hand in hand. Even if you've always known what you wanted to do, chances are you do not wake up every day with excitement about all that it entails. You may be in your dream job as a Marketing Exec but getting to work before the sun comes up and leaving well past happy hour may leave you on empty.

Let's not get started on the finance guru's guide to success: have 7-10 streams of income. Like when am I supposed to sleep? I can't front, I have moments that I want to quit. But quit and do what? What's the alternative to hard work? Being broke? Stepping outside of my purpose? Nah, that's not an option. But the ease of settling sure is tempting.

I've been getting the message to "take the step." Don't worry about the long haul, just follow God's instruction for right now. However, every now and then I get frustrated with the process.

In all honesty I think "Mr. Guru's multiple streams of income" was referring to the ones that cha-ching while you sleep because that "sleep when you die" motto is for the...dead.

I often go back to Will Smith's memoir, Will, where he relates the story of restoring a brick wall in his father's shop, to life. In the year and a half that it took to build that wall, Will and his brother felt the project would never be complete. Once the final brick was laid, their father said to them, "Don't ya'll ever tell me you can't do something." That's what life is about. Building the life that you are created to, brick by brick.

Right now it may feel like you'll never reach all of the goals you have set for yourself. But life goes on regardless of your feelings, so you must too. The longer you delay taking the first step, the more you prolong the process. And we just said the process is the hardest part. In the meantime, you should be putting new tools in your toolbox because those skills are going to help you once you reach your goal. Don't sit on your dreams. You'll be so much happier, so much more full if you pursue.
